Mariam Kalsoom, Lecturer in Therapeutic Radiography.

“If you’re going to be finishing your A levels this year and really want to have a job in the NHS, make a difference, and love working with people, I would really advise you to look further into becoming a therapeutic radiographer and really consider this as an exciting career choice.”

Mercia Edwards, Therapeutic Radiographer at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

“I got into therapeutic radiography because my dad was a cancer patient, and he had radiotherapy at QE Hospital.

“It was before COVID had started, so I went with him to his appointments where and as I could. And, honestly, before that, I had never heard of it.

“It’s not something that you hear about in school or college at all. And it was lovely. It fascinated me because the radiographers were absolutely lovely. They treated you like you’re theirs. You’d think cancer, and you’d think, oh, it’s depressing.

“You know, it’s sad. It’s nothing like that at all. The patients were very happy, so that’s what interested me in the course.

“Then I started to get my own study about the course itself. I went on to work experience for a couple of days in Worcester Oncology Centre just to get a grasp of it, and it fascinated me so much, and I loved it.”

Fiza, student therapeutic radiography at Birmingham City University and on placement at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
